Phantom 7.2 Chromatic Violet – Heat, Light, and Precision
Every once in a while, a customer asks for something that pushes the limits of style while still honoring performance. This build started as a Phantom 7.5, but through conversion, refinishing, and an obsessive attention to detail, it became something entirely new: a Phantom 7.2 with an electric violet personality.
From 7.5 to 7.2
The original 7.5 setup featured a slant neck. For this project, we re-engineered the head into a 7.2-style L-neck configuration for a slight increase in offset, with reduced toe-hang. This modification not only changes the way the putter sets up but also creates a perfect canvas for what would become an incredibly unique finish.
Chromatic Violet Hosel
The customer was drawn to my chromatic blue hosels but wanted to push further into the purple spectrum. The result is a hosel that gleams like electric violet, shifting between blue and purple depending on the light. This finish isn’t paint — it’s the product of controlled heat tinting on raw stainless, a process that reveals the natural beauty of the metal itself.
The mirror polish underneath enhances the effect, creating depth and brilliance in every angle.
Torch Aesthetic: Sunburst and Bronze
With a mallet head like the Phantom, there’s plenty of surface area to play with. Along the fangs and perimeter edges, additional heat was applied to create a chromatic sunburst fade: blues and purples blending seamlessly into warm bronze tones through the impact area.
This treatment frames the ball at address with a subtle, radiant halo — a look that’s both striking and confidence-inspiring.
Paint Fills & Alignment
To balance the strong metalwork, the paint fills were chosen with restraint and purpose:
Topline Alignment: Bright white fills to match the sole plate alignment lines, keeping the visual focus crisp.
Face Engraving: Subtle champagne gold in the Scotty Cameron milling — muted, yet luxurious.
Sole Weights: Torch-finished hardware filled with candy violet and candy purple, their transparency complementing the chromatic torched tones.
Phantom Branding: Candy purple for consistency, tying the theme together.
Custom Toe Stamp: Player’s name stamped and filled in candy purple — a final touch of personalization.
Why This Build Works
The Phantom 7.2 Chromatic Violet isn’t just about pushing color. It’s about balance — between bold and subtle, between natural heat finishes and precise paint fills. Too much purple, and it would overwhelm. Too little, and it wouldn’t feel intentional.
The end result is a putter that is equal parts performance tool and art piece. The satin bronze base tones keep it grounded, while the violet highlights and candy accents elevate it to something unforgettable.
This putter is proof that the most striking results often come not from coatings or paints, but from the metal itself — shaped, heated, and refined until it reveals its own spectrum of color.
One of my favorite builds to date, the Phantom 7.2 Chromatic Violet embodies the idea of doing the most — while keeping it perfectly balanced.
