Summary:
A Scotty Cameron Super Select Newport Plus transformed from an L-neck into a precision hand-milled center shaft gamer. This build showcases raw welding mastery, flawless structural integration, and custom candy color fills that turn technical excellence into functional art.
Read Time: 4 minutes
Some builds are defined by their bold color work, others by the sheer craftsmanship hidden in their lines. This Super Select Newport Plus is a rare fusion of both — a blade that’s been cut, reshaped, and reborn with a center shaft and a raw weld finish that proudly displays the handwork behind it.
From L-Neck to Center Shaft
This putter started life with the standard L-neck hosel and the factory I-beam milling along the neck shoulder. That original neck position was removed entirely, replaced with a custom hand-milled center shaft post made from raw stainless steel stock.
Shaping the post was as critical as its placement. The taper narrows toward the top line, with a subtle pinch detail to give dimension and flow. This contouring isn’t just for looks — it makes the connection feel factory-intentional, like the head was always meant to be center-shafted.
The Raw Weld: Honesty in Metalwork
Instead of polishing or blending the weld, this customer chose to leave the weld raw — a decision that turns the heat signature into part of the aesthetic.
The colors — purples, blues, and straw golds — are natural oxides formed when stainless meets oxygen during the weld. They tell a story about temperature control and gas coverage, and here they also signal perfect execution: no overheating, no grain migration beyond the acceptable range, and no structural compromise.
Leaving a weld raw at this level requires skill and restraint. Every bead, every fade, and every bit of discoloration is exposed. It’s a visual record of a process done exactly right.
Tour Blast & Seamless Integration
Before welding the new neck, the previous hosel area was re-sculpted by hand so there’s no trace of the original neck position. The goal: make it look like it was milled this way. Once shaped, the head received a Tour Blast finish, muting glare and giving the stainless a soft, uniform appearance that works beautifully with the raw weld’s colorful tones.
Custom Paint Scheme
This build’s color palette balances boldness and harmony.
Face: Deep candy blue “Scotty Cameron” branding
Sole plate: untouched
Weights: Candy blue in the toe, candy red in the heel — a deliberate choice to avoid color stacking when flipping the putter
Flange line: Thick, jet black centerline for confident aiming
Triple cavity dots: Candy red, blue and milky-white fill, creating luxurious depth to the flat surfaces
Details & Finishing Touches
Before final assembly, I removed minor blemishes: a gouge in the flange and a slice in one bumper were smoothed to the point of being untraceable.
These finishing passes are subtle, but they matter. The end result is a putter that looks fresh — built to be gamed hard, but with the crispness of a showpiece.
